Monarch Butterfly

Monarch butterflies could travel involving fifty-100 miles per day; it can take up to two months to complete their journey to winter season habitats.

Millions of monarch butterflies make the journey down to Mexico to perch for the winter. Throughout the migration tens of thousands will land on one tree in certain locations along their migratory route. Monarchs can easily produce four generations during one summer. The first three generations will have life spans from two-six weeks and will continue moving north. During this time they will mate and have the next generation which will keep on the northward migration. The fourth generation of monarchs is different and can live up to 9 months. These are the butterflies that will migrate south for winter to either Mexico or southern California.

This would be like an adult person lifting two heavy cars full of people, During fall migration migrating Monarchs have been seen flying by tall buildings such as the Empire State Building hundreds of meters high. Butterflies are picked up by storm fronts and moved 100's of km, probably at altitudes of thousands of meters.

Even though Skippers are considered to be butterflies their appearance would suggest that their might be more closely related to moths than butterflies. The Spring Azure is one of the shortest lived butterflies lasting only a couple of days, The male, of some species of butterflies, emits it's pheromones through special scales on their wings, Some members of the Skipper family of butterflies can attain flight speeds in excess of 50 kph.

Some larvae of butterfly communicate with ants by producing sounds, Some moths never eat anything as adults because they don’t have mouths. They must live on the energy they stored as caterpillars, Butterflies are transparent. Color in the wings comes from iridescent scales that are overlapped similar to roof shingles.

Butterflies are cold-blooded, meaning they cannot regulate their own body temperature.

There are 292 species of butterflies in Canada. Most of which are found in British Columbia (176) and the fewest on Prince Edward Island (42). In Ontario we have 142 species.

Caterpillars shed their skin to accommodate growth.....just like snakes have to.

Monarchs have been known to migrate over 3000km. In fact a Monarch tagged at Presqu'ile, here in southern Ontario, was recovered in Mexico and is on record as being the longest insect migration.

Butterflies make up 20 percent of the order lepidoptera.

A caterpillar grows to about 27,000 times the size it was when it first emerged from its egg. So if a human baby weighed 9 pounds (4kg)at birth and grew at the same rate as a caterpillar, it would weigh 243,000 pounds (110,000kg) when fully grown!

The Karner Blue butterfly became extirpated in Ontario around 1991.

The Giant Swallowtail is the largest butterfly found in Canada. It's wingspan can reach up to 5".

About 24,000 pupae are sent up to be released in the aviary each year. Luckily, we don’t have to give them all names...

All butterflies have complex eyes made up of about 60,000 lenses and there are certain species of butterflies that have thousands of eyes. Butterflies can see color such as green, red and yellow and they can even see ultraviolet light.

As a result, their body temperature changes with the temperature of their surroundings. If they get too cold, they are unable to fly and must warm up their muscles in order to resume flight. Butterflies can fly as long as the air is between 60°-108°F (16°-42°C), although temperatures between 82°-100°F (28°-38°C) are best.

Butterflies can attain a flight speed of up to 50 kph

Butterflies weigh only as much as two rose petals, but can fly thousands of miles.

Females generally live longer than males.

Here are some more interesting and amazing about butterfly facts

Butterflies attract mates using scents known as pheromones. Female butterfly pheromones are not detectable by humans but some male pheromones may be recognized as fruity or flower-like scents.

What is a group of butterflies called? Some call a group of butterflies a "'Kaleidoscope'', others have called them a ''Swarm'' or ''Rabble'' or even a "Flight". What are your thoughts?

There are up to 24,000 species of butterflies around the world. Estimates vary quite a lot because some people include sub-species (variants of known butterflies) and we believe there are still a few to be discovered.
